An Eye for
the Unexpected.

I live where medicine meets art.

I turn the intricacies of medicine and science into visual scenes and editorial stories — precise in their substance, imaginative in their telling, and made to invite a closer look.

An extravagant masquerade of gilded cages, elaborate disguises, and conspicuous excess.
Selected work

Complex Ideas, Distinct Perspectives

A lavish masquerade where moderation wasn’t invited. An evening at a contemporary-art museum. A bowling alley on league night. Look closely: the decorations, the guests, even the objects tucked away in the background, are more than meets the eye. These worlds speak a language of symbols: an object might represent an antibody, a mechanism of action, or a histopathologic finding. My work at Physeo began with those symbols — drawing from our shared vocabulary, inventing what was missing, and imagining a scene where they could all belong. Familiar symbols took on new forms without losing their meaning. Working with illustrators and writers, I helped bring each world into focus, pairing meticulous medical detail with atmosphere, humor, and a story to follow. Nothing required you to guess the meaning: we gave you the decoder. What first looked like an unfamiliar world became one you could read.

Nephritic Syndrome

An evening at a contemporary-art museum, with renal pathology on display.

Magnesium Toxicity

In a loft inspired by Warhol’s Factory, familiar faces change complexion, spilled milk becomes sculpture, and a heart shares its canvas with handcuffs.

Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease

Flying saucers hover over a farm where the barn clock races and the cattle have attracted unwelcome attention.

Diabetes Health Maintenance

A retro racing game gives the recurring demands of diabetes care a visible structure.

Lung Cancer

A bowling alley on league night, all patterned shirts, improbable refreshments, and competitive theatrics.

Achalasia

Behind the counter of a bakery and wine shop, an obstinate piping bag frustrates the baker while a toucan has succumbed to the nearby berries and wears the evidence on its beak.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

At an ice-fishing camp, a raft frozen into the lake continues to collect parking tickets, its mounting fines completing a playful echo of a particular pharmacologic treatment’s name.

About

About Emily

I’m Emily Anne Dinning, MD — a writer, editor, and creative director working across medicine, science, and art.

The details that hold my attention often contain another story: a microscopic finding, an unlikely association, an ordinary object with the beginnings of something extravagant. My work moves from research and science journalism to visual medical education and handmade art, following those possibilities into forms others can read, explore, and remember. In poetry, personal essays, and video editing, that same attention turns toward rhythm, atmosphere, and the feeling that lingers after the final line or frame.

Medicine + Science:Medical training, clinical and translational research, laboratory research, histology, microscopy, cell culture, molecular techniques, literature review, and peer-reviewed authorship.
Writing + Editing:Medical and science journalism, health communication, press releases, educational scripts, SEO writing, substantive editing, editorial leadership, poetry, personal essays, and creative nonfiction.

Science with a Point of View

An ambulance becomes a consultation room. An Impressionist painting offers a way into chemistry. The advice to drink more water becomes a question of how much is too much. My writing moves between science journalism, health communications, and educational essays, drawing on interviews, scientific detail, and unexpected associations to bring a subject into focus. The voice changes with the piece: precise, conversational, and often irreverent.

Research + Authorship

The Work of Understanding

Medical knowledge takes shape through inquiry and interpretation, then finds expression in the ways we teach, write, and explain. My work in pathology, experimental oncology, and medical education spans laboratory investigation, peer-reviewed publication, and textbook authorship. Across these forms, close attention to evidence shapes both the questions being asked and the language used to explain them.

More Is, in Fact, More

Fever Dream begins with an ordinary object and follows it somewhere considerably less ordinary.

A collar becomes a field of colored stones. A bag acquires its own small constellation. Rhinestones, unexpected textures, and strange little treasures accumulate into accessories that treat excess as a form of expression. I design and make each piece, carrying its character through the styling, photography, and words that introduce it to the world.

My Role:Design, making, styling, photography, and brand writing.
The Work:Handmade accessories and wearable art.
The Brand:Fever Dream by Emily — an independent shop on Etsy.
A Little More Heart

Fuzzy Heart Headband

Sentiment, with the volume turned up. Fuzzy hearts in pale pink and fuchsia multiply across a headband, giving a familiar shape a softer, more mischievous life.

Designed and made by me, usually one piece at a time.
